Informationen

In 1460, the residence on the southwest corner of the Münsterplatz (cathedral square) was first recorded with the name "Haus zum Kempfen" (Kempfen House). It is still possible to clearly see the differences in the facades, one from the Middle Ages, the other from a previous time.

Today, the building is known as the "Bankhaus Krebs" (Krebs Bank). It is named for the banker and business family Krebs, whose roots date back to the 13th century, and obtained the house in 1739.

In 1874, Eugen Krebs took over the bank. As a member of the city council, the citizen's committee and the district council, Krebs played an important role in the social life of the city. In his time, the house was a significant cultural meeting place. For example, the pianist and composer Franz Liszt was a guest in 1882.

Max Meckel and his son Carl Anton Meckel used Renaissance and Late Baroque elements in their renovation of the house between 1904 - 1905. The left portal is ornamentally framed and crowned with an inscription. The upper railing features Rococo motifs. A house Madonna in the style of the 15th century is mounted on the third floor.

The interior was heavily damaged in the 1944 bombing.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Krebs Bank was the oldest local private financial institute which remained intact and thus, able to avoid a merger with a larger bank. However, in 1995, the institute declared bankruptcy. The house interior has been renovated and is now home to various offices and a women's clothing store.
