Informationen

The present "Naturkundemuseum" (Natural History Museum) was erected by the City's Master Builder J. Straub between 1855 and 1856. It was built as the "Lehr-und Erziehungsinstitut" (an institute for teaching and upbringing) for the Dominicans of Adelhausen (the village of Adelhausen - first mentioned in documents in 1008 - located near what is today the Unterwiehre south of the Dreisam). The building belonged to the New Adelhauser Cloister, which disbanded in 1867. Since 1931, the building houses the Natural History and Folklore museums and various city administrative offices and workshops for Freiburg's collection (including restoration workshops).
