The "Haus zum Schönen Eck" (House on the Beautiful Corner ), also known as the "Wentzinger-Haus" was built in 1761 by the Freiburg sculptor, painter and architect Johann Christian Wentzinger (1710 - 1797).He constructed and furnished the house as his personal residence and studio. The facade is constructed with seven axes. The artistic balcony grille bears a self portrait of the man of the house, a bust of gilded molten lead. The two-storied oval of the stair room is especially worth seeing. The main spiral staircase swings up to a gallery, which is crowned with a ceiling mural entitled "The Guiding of the Devout Soul to Heaven through Hercules the Virtuous Hero". The heavily damaged painting was cleaned and preserved in 1927 by the restorer P.H. Hübner. Additional restorations followed in 1945 and 1976. The city came into possession of the house in 1905. The "City Gallery for New Art" was located in the house from 1926/27. The house was survived the bombings in World War II. From 1949 -1983, the "Haus zum Schönen Eck" was used by the music school for seminars and administrative purposes. The house was taken over by the Adelhausen Foundation in 1989 and has been turned into the Museum für Stadtgeschichte (Museum for City History). It displays exhibits from various aspects of Freiburg's history. The model of the city in the basement and a large model of the Cathedral as a construction site are especially worth noting. Opening times: Tu. - Fr. 9:30 - 17:00, Sa/So 10:30 - 17:00. The entrance tickets may also be used at the Augustinermuseum. Tel: 201-2515 |
