F.A. Bagnator began work on the "Deutschordenskommende" building in 1768 for the Order of Teutonic Knights. The main wing on the Salzstraße (with its 13 windows), the chapel and the rear section were finished in 1774. Today, the building is home to Freiburg´s Civil Senate.

The building was almost completely destroyed by bombs on November 27, 1994. Only sections of the facade, the splendid portal with its cherubim and the balcony remained.

Reconstruction took place between 1982-1986 through the efforts of the Hochbauamt I (Office of Structural Engineering) and M. Bächer. Portions of the ruins, (which had been stored following the post-war rubble clearance), were used in the rebuilding.
